Horsemen follows Aidan Breslin, a police detective in New York who is struggling to raise his two young sons while mourning his wife's recent death. When a series of ritualistic killings comes to his attention, he notices that each murder appears to be modelled on one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from biblical prophecy. As he investigates the four suspects behind the crimes, he finds an unsettling personal link between himself and the killers. Dennis Quaid plays Breslin, with Zhang Ziyi, Lou Taylor Pucci, Clifton Collins Jr., Barry Shabaka Henley and Patrick Fugit among the credited cast of thirty-three.
The film was directed by Jonas Åkerlund, whose second feature it is, following Spun in 2003 and preceding Small Apartments, Lords of Chaos and Polar. Dave Callaham wrote the screenplay, and Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller produced through Platinum Dunes, with Mandate Pictures and Radar Pictures also involved. It was made for around 20 million dollars and, on release in February 2009, took roughly one million dollars worldwide.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from more than 25,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from a much smaller vote count. A film critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10, drawn from six reviews, places critical opinion below the audience scores on both platforms, though the small number of reviews makes that gap limited in what it can show.
