Stingaree

Set in 1874 in the Australian outback, Stingaree centres on Hilda Bouverie, a servant in the household of the wealthy Clarkson family, who run a sheep farm. Hilda dreams of becoming a singer, a hope that the jealous Mrs. Clarkson works to stamp out. When the celebrated London composer Sir Julian Kent is expected to visit, Mrs. Clarkson arranges for Hilda to be kept out of sight, so that her own modest singing voice will not suffer by comparison. Around the same time, the notorious outlaw Stingaree arrives in the area and abducts Sir Julian, then takes the composer's place at the Clarkson home, where he meets Hilda shortly before she is due to leave.

William A. Wellman directed the film, the fifth of the sixteen features he made in chronological order, following Safe in Hell and preceding A Star Is Born. Becky Gardiner wrote the screenplay, and the cast of thirty credited players is led by Irene Dunne as Hilda, Richard Dix as Stingaree, Mary Boland as Mrs. Clarkson and Conway Tearle as Sir Julian Kent, with Andy Devine and Una O'Connor also appearing. RKO Radio Pictures produced the 77-minute adventure, which blends comedy, drama and romance.

Released in May 1934, Stingaree drew a modest response on IMDb, where it holds a rating of 5.8 from 573 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller sample of 11 votes.
