Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus

Set in late 1950s New York, Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus follows a woman living a comfortable but constrained life as the wife of photographer Allan Arbus, mother to their daughters and assistant in his studio, with her wealthy parents supporting the family business. Restless inside that respectable world, she becomes fascinated by a masked new neighbour in her building. Their meeting draws her into unfamiliar circles and encourages her to pursue photography on her own terms, unsettling her marriage and her family's expectations.

The film is directed by Steven Shainberg, his second feature after Secretary (2002) and the one preceding Rupture (2016). Erin Cressida Wilson wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Nicole Kidman as Diane Arbus and Robert Downey Jr. as Lionel Sweeney, with Ty Burrell as Allan Arbus, Harris Yulin and Jane Alexander as her parents, and Emmy Clarke as Grace Arbus. The story is presented as an imagined portrait rather than a factual account of the photographer's life.

With a budget of about 17 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 2 million worldwide, a poor result at the box office. Audiences have been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.3/10 from around 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1/10 from roughly 310 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 109 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
