Short description
Ken, a WWII GI, returns home after he's paralyzed in battle. Residing in the paraplegic ward of a veteran's hospital and embittered by his condition, he refuses to see his fiancée and sinks into a solitary world of hatred and hostility. Head physician, Dr. Brock cajoles the withdrawn Ken into the life of the ward, where fellow patients Norm, Leo and Angel begin to pull him out of his spiritual dilemma.
What's left behind the scenes
- To prepare for the role of a bitter character with paraplegia in this film, Marlon Brando (1924-2004) spent an entire month in a bed at a veterans' hospital.
- During filming, Brando remained in a wheelchair both on and off set. He left the wheelchair only once to attend a party where he wanted to meet Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977). He was persuaded to get out of the wheelchair and dress up properly by actress Shelley Winters, with whom he was dating at the time.
- This is Marlon Brando's debut feature film as an actor.
