Stander

Stander is a biographical crime drama about André Stander, a white South African police captain in Johannesburg during the apartheid era. After taking part in the violent suppression of a protest, he undergoes a crisis of conscience and turns against the system he served, carrying out a bank robbery. He is drawn back into the police world, but this time as a wanted criminal rather than an officer, and he goes on to lead a gang of robbers with accomplices Allan Heyl and Lee McCall.

The film is directed by Bronwen Hughes, her third feature after Harriet the Spy (1996) and Forces of Nature (1999), from a screenplay by Bima Stagg. Thomas Jane plays André Stander, with Dexter Fletcher as Lee McCall, David O'Hara as Allan Heyl, Deborah Kara Unger as his wife Bekkie, Ashley Taylor as his former police partner Cor van Deventer, and Marius Weyers as General Stander. It was produced by Julia Verdin, Chris Roland and Martin Katz, with a budget of about 15 million US dollars, and was made as a co-production involving Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and South Africa.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from roughly 9,600 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from about 120 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 63 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb.
