Short description
Darkman III: Die Darkman Die is a 1996 action and horror film about Peyton Westlake, a scientist turned disfigured vigilante who relies on synthetic skin and disguises. Needing money for his research, he crosses paths with Peter Rooker, a wealthy crime boss whose fortune comes from drug trafficking. Rooker wants the secret behind Westlake's abilities and sets a trap, drawing in the scientist with the prospect of surgery that could restore him. Dr. Bridget Thorne, one of the surgeons who treated Westlake after the accident that scarred him, claims she can reconnect the severed nerves and bring back sensation. Rooker has other plans for the tissue he obtains, aiming to turn it into something deadly for his own organisation.
Bradford May directed the film, his second entry in the series following Darkman II: The Return of Durant the previous year. Arnold Vosloo returns as Westlake, with Jeff Fahey as Rooker, Darlanne Fluegel as Thorne, Roxann Dawson as Angela Rooker, and Nigel Bennett as Nico. Mike Werb and Michael Colleary wrote the screenplay, and David Roessell produced. It was made in the United States by Universal Pictures, Renaissance Pictures and MCA/Universal Home Video, and runs 87 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.8 from around 4,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.3 from 163 votes. A critics' score of 4.9 from 18 reviews places it close to the audience response on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot simultaneously with Bradford May’s horror film “Man of Darkness II: Duran’s Return” (1994). Initially, it was assumed that the second film in the franchise would be “Man of Darkness III,” but at some point, a different decision was made, and the release dates of the films, along with the numbering in the title, were swapped.
- The films "Dark Man II" and "Dark Man III" were filmed simultaneously, so some shots from different films are completely identical to each other.
- While working on the script for "Dark Man III", Mike Werb and Michael Colleary refined the script for John Woo's action film "Face/Off". Woo's project was approved first, but the film was made after the films in the "Dark Man" franchise. Some elements of Woo's action film are similar to plot devices in "Dark Man III".
