Maryan is an Indian action thriller about a fisherman from a coastal village in Tamil Nadu who leaves his family, friends and his sweetheart Panimalar behind to take a job on an oil platform off the coast of Africa. He hopes the two-year contract will let him return home and build a better life, but while he is abroad he is seized by captors who treat him as a commodity, and his plans to reunite with the woman he loves are thrown into doubt. The story draws on a newspaper account of a real hostage crisis in Sudan involving three Indian oil workers, and centres on one man's struggle to survive and make it home.
The film was directed by Bharat Bala, who wrote the screenplay with Sriram Rajan, and produced by V. Ravichandran for Aascar Films. It marked Bharat Bala's move into feature filmmaking after his earlier career, and stars Dhanush as Mariyaan, with Parvathy Thiruvothu as Panimalar, alongside Jagan, Appukutty, Uma Riyaz Khan and Salim Kumar. Running 145 minutes, it is an action-oriented thriller built around its lead performance.
Maryan has a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6 out of 10 from a much smaller voter pool of 34.
