Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom traces Nelson Mandela's life from his boyhood in a rural village to his swearing-in as South Africa's first democratically elected president. The film follows his growth into a leading opponent of apartheid, the years he spent imprisoned, and the efforts of those close to him, including his wife Winnie, to secure his release.
The film is based on Mandela's autobiography and was written by William Nicholson, with Justin Chadwick directing. It came second in Chadwick's filmography, between The Other Boleyn Girl and Tulip Fever. Idris Elba plays Mandela, Naomie Harris plays Winnie Madikizela, and the supporting cast includes Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Fana Mokoena and Robert Hobbs. Produced by David M. Thompson, Anant Singh and Brian Cox, it is a British, American, French and South African co-production that cost about 35 million dollars and took roughly 28 million at the worldwide box office, meaning it did not recoup its budget in cinemas.
The film runs 141 minutes. Audiences rate it moderately: 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 30,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a smaller number of votes, while critics gave it 6.2 out of 10 across 145 reviews.
