No Escape

Jack Dwyer moves to Southeast Asia with his wife Annie and their two daughters for a new job and a fresh start. Shortly after the family arrives, armed unrest breaks out and the country is thrown into a violent coup. Foreigners are singled out and killed, and the Dwyers are forced to abandon their new home when it comes under attack. With help from a British man named Hammond, they try to reach the American embassy and get out of the country.

John Erick Dowdle directed and wrote the screenplay with Drew Dowdle, who also produced. It is the fifth feature Dowdle directed, following The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Quarantine, Devil and As Above, So Below. Owen Wilson plays Jack, Lake Bell plays Annie, and Pierce Brosnan plays Hammond, with Sterling Jerins and Claire Geare as the daughters. The film was made for about 5 million dollars and took in roughly 54 million worldwide, a substantial return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 2,801 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 5.1 out of 10 from 161 reviews, a clear gap between professional and audience response.
