Kyle LeBlanc is an American engineer working in Russia when his wife is murdered. The man responsible is freed by a corrupt court, and Kyle takes justice into his own hands, killing him. That act sends him to Kravavi, a remote, brutal Russian prison where rival gangs hold sway and the guards run organised fights between inmates that often end in death. Stripped of his freedom and everything he had, Kyle has to endure the violence around him and find a way to survive a place that few leave.
The film is a prison action drama directed by Ringo Lam, working from a script by Eric James Virgets and Jorge Alvarez. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Kyle, with Lawrence Taylor, Lloyd Battista, Carlos Gómez, Chris Moir and Billy Rieck among the credited cast, which numbers around sixty performers and a crew of roughly fifty-five. It came after Lam's Maximum Risk and Replicant and belongs to a run of films, including Prison on Fire and its sequel, in which he returned to confinement as a setting for violent conflict. It is a modestly scaled production, with a budget of about 17 million dollars.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.1 from roughly 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller base of 638 votes. The higher TMDB figure reflects a small, more selective group of viewers rather than broad agreement, while the larger IMDb sample points to middling approval overall. The running time is 96 minutes.
