Short description
Metallica: Through the Never follows Trip, a young roadie working for the band Metallica during a live show. When he is sent to retrieve a bag the group needs for the performance, the errand turns into a strange journey through a city in turmoil, where he encounters rioting crowds, riot police and a masked rider pursuing him. The film cuts between this fictional story and footage of Metallica performing on stage.
Nimród Antal directed the film and wrote it with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It came after Antal's Predators and before Retribution, and is the sixth feature he directed. Dane DeHaan plays Trip, while the band members appear as themselves, with Mackenzie Gray as the Tall Man.
The production had a budget of 18 million dollars and returned about 8 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from around 326 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 66 reviews places it in line with the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's screenplay is 15 pages long and contains very little dialogue.
- The film's title is the name of the seventh track from Metallica's album – Metallica (Black Album) from 1991. Nevertheless, it is not performed in the film.
- Dutch director Anton Corbijn was offered to head the project, but he had to decline due to scheduling conflicts with his film "A Most Wanted Man" (2014).
- At the very beginning of the film, a guy falls off a skateboard. Interestingly, James Hetfield himself has broken his arm several times due to this mode of transportation, so his concert contract now includes a clause "NO SKATEBOARDING".
- Some of the compositions performed at the concert were not included in the film. The compositions not included are: “Sad But True,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” “Fade to Black,” and “Seek and Destroy.”
- The concert footage featured in the film was shot on August 24, 2012, at “Rogers Arena” in Vancouver (Canada).
