Blind Detective is a Hong Kong crime film about a gifted police detective who loses his sight during a mission and is forced into early retirement. He scrapes a living by taking on cold cases for reward money, until a younger police inspector draws him into an investigation tied to her own past. Their partnership sets up the film's central tension: a man whose remaining senses have sharpened in place of his sight, working alongside an officer determined to prove he still belongs in the field.
Johnnie To directed, working from a screenplay by Ray Chan Wai-Ban, Yau Nai-Hoi and Yu Xi, with To and Wai Ka-Fai producing. It is the twenty-second of the twenty-three films To has directed in chronological order, arriving after Drug War and before Septet: The Story of Hong Kong. Andy Lau plays Johnston and Sammi Cheng plays Ho, with Guo Tao, Gao Yuanyuan, Wang Ziyi and Lang Yueting among a credited cast of sixty. The production, a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese co-financing effort, had a budget of about 11 million US dollars.
On TMDB the film holds a 6.2 out of 10 from 139 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 11 reviews places it below the audience figure, suggesting reviewers were harder on the film than general viewers were. It runs 129 minutes and blends action, comedy, crime, drama, mystery and thriller elements.
