Huck Cheever is a professional poker player in Las Vegas whose instinct for risk at the table does not carry over into his private life, where he keeps his distance and avoids lasting attachments. He sets out to win the World Series of Poker and, at the same time, to win over Billie Offer, a young singer new to the city. Standing in his way is his father, L.C. Cheever, a two-time world champion of Texas Hold'em who walked out on Huck's mother years earlier; the two men end up facing each other not only in their shared history but across the card table.
Curtis Hanson directed and co-wrote the film with Eric Roth, and produced it with Carol Fenelon and Denise Di Novi. It was the eleventh of the thirteen features Hanson directed, following In Her Shoes and preceding Too Big to Fail. Eric Bana stars as Huck, with Drew Barrymore as Billie, Robert Duvall as L.C., and Debra Messing, Jean Smart and Robert Downey Jr. in supporting roles. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures were among the production companies.
The film had a budget of 55 million USD and took about 8 million USD worldwide, a wide gap between spending and return. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7/10 from 293 votes, while critics gave it 5/10 across 141 reviews, placing the two roughly in line with each other.
