Evan Danielson is a financial executive whose devotion to his work has left little room for his seven-year-old daughter, Olivia. When his career begins to falter and a rival at the firm, Johnny Whitefeather, gains the upper hand, Evan is pushed to spend more time with the girl. He discovers that the imaginary world Olivia describes, populated by characters she consults through a purple blanket, appears to hold clues about movements in the stock market. Evan tries to use what she tells him to repair his standing at work, a calculation that forces him to weigh his ambitions against his responsibilities as a father.
Karey Kirkpatrick directed the film, the second of three features he has made, following Over the Hedge and preceding Smallfoot. Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson wrote the screenplay, with Solomon producing alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Eddie Murphy plays Evan, Thomas Haden Church plays Whitefeather, and Yara Shahidi plays Olivia; Ronny Cox, Stephen Rannazzisi and Nicole Ari Parker appear in supporting roles. The production, a Paramount release made with Nickelodeon Movies, cost about 55 million dollars and took roughly 23 million dollars worldwide, a return well below its budget. On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from just over 600 votes.
