A group of cowboys from New Mexico scrape by with odd jobs and a small string of horses. When a gangly, crooked-legged racehorse comes into their care, they discover he has qualified for the Kentucky Derby. Getting him to Churchill Downs means a long trip, a string of mishaps and a showdown with the sport's wealthy establishment, but the men press on with the horse that nobody else believed in. The story draws on the real Mine That Bird, the 2009 Derby winner, and the people around him.
Jim Wilson directed and wrote the screenplay with Faith Conro. The film was released in 2014 and runs 110 minutes. Skeet Ulrich plays Chip Woolley and Christian Kane plays Mark Allen, with William Devane, Madelyn Deutch, Todd Lowe and David Atkinson in supporting roles. It was made by Ten Furlongs on a budget of 10 million dollars and took about 1 million dollars worldwide.
On TMDB the film holds a 6.7 rating from 86 votes, suggesting a small but generally favourable audience response rather than a broad one. The gap between its budget and its box office points to a title that found limited reach in cinemas.
