Short description
In Romania during the final years of the Ceaușescu regime, Otilia and Găbiță share a room in a student dormitory. When Găbiță becomes pregnant, the two friends must arrange an illegal abortion, since terminating a pregnancy is a criminal offence. They borrow money, book a room in a cheap hotel, and set up a meeting with a man known as Domnu' Bebe, who is willing to perform the procedure. What begins as a logistical ordeal over the course of a single day becomes an increasingly difficult and degrading experience for both young women.
Cristian Mungiu wrote, directed and produced the film, which was released in 2007 and stands as his first feature, followed by Beyond the Hills, Graduation, R.M.N. and Fjord. Anamaria Marinca plays Otilia, Laura Vasiliu plays Găbiță and Vlad Ivanov appears as Domnu' Bebe, with supporting roles from Alexandru Potocean, Luminița Gheorghiu and Adi Cărăuleanu among a credited cast of thirty-three. Running 114 minutes, the Belgian-Romanian co-production has earned about 10 million dollars worldwide.
