Our Kind of Traitor
Short description
Our Kind of Traitor follows Perry, an Oxford academic, and his girlfriend Gail, a lawyer, who are on holiday when they meet Dima, a wealthy and flamboyant Russian. Dima is involved in laundering money for organised crime, and he asks the couple for help in approaching British intelligence, hoping to trade what he knows for protection. What begins as an unexpected acquaintance draws Perry and Gail into a world of espionage and manipulation that stretches from London to Paris and the Alps, where they must work with a British agent whose methods are far from conventional. The film is based on John le Carré's novel of the same name.
Susanna White directed the film, which sits between Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010) and Woman Walks Ahead (2018) in her filmography. Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay. Ewan McGregor and Naomie Harris play the couple at the centre of the story, with Stellan Skarsgård as Dima, Damian Lewis as the intelligence agent Hector, and Jeremy Northam and Khalid Abdalla among the supporting cast.
The production had a budget of about 4 million USD and took roughly 10 million USD worldwide, a modest return relative to its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 633 votes, while film critics' reviews give it 6 out of 10 from 144 reviews, meaning critical and audience assessments are closely aligned.
