Life of Crime
Short description
Two small-time crooks, Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, meet in prison and team up once they are out. Their plan is to kidnap Mickey Dawson, the wife of a wealthy Detroit property developer, and demand a million dollars for her return. The scheme falls apart when her husband, Frank, shows no interest in paying, since he had already been planning to leave her and is holidaying with his mistress. Ordell and Louis are forced to rethink, and Mickey, angry at her husband's refusal, becomes an unexpected ally in their plan. The film is set in the 1970s and takes place years before the events of Jackie Brown.
Daniel Schechter wrote and directed Life of Crime, which is based on Elmore Leonard's novel The Switch. It was Schechter's third feature as director. Jennifer Aniston plays Mickey, with John Hawkes and Yasiin Bey as the kidnappers, Isla Fisher as Frank's mistress, Will Forte as Marshall Taylor and Tim Robbins as Frank Dawson. The production had a budget of around 12 million dollars and a credited cast of 28 and crew of 67.
Released in 2013, the film runs 100 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from roughly 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.7 from around 439 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 79 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a similar mixed response from both groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, Aniston received a strong blow to the jaw. The incident occurred while filming a fight scene involving actor John Hawkes and rapper Dante Smith, better known as Mos Def. According to the plot, Aniston tries to break up the fighting men. However, during the shooting, one of the actors accidentally hit the actress in the jaw. The blow was so strong that Aniston simply collapsed to the floor.
- The film opens stating that the action takes place in Detroit in 1978, however, throughout the film, characters are reading newspapers dated 1977.

- The scene in the Bahamas features "Noodle Long and Soft" golf balls. These balls didn't appear until 25 years later, and therefore couldn't have existed during the time the film is set.
