Brick Lane

Nazneen grows up in Bangladesh and, at seventeen, enters an arranged marriage with Chanu, a man considerably older than she is. She leaves her family and country for London, where she settles with her husband in the Brick Lane area of the East End. Unfamiliar with the language and isolated in her new surroundings, she raises their daughters while building a life inside a community shaped by prejudice and religious tensions. Years into the marriage, she meets Karim, a younger man, and the encounter unsettles the routine she has accepted.

The film is a British and Indian production directed by Sarah Gavron, with a screenplay by Abi Morgan and Laura Jones and producing work by Chris Collins and Alison Owen. Tannishtha Chatterjee plays Nazneen, Satish Kaushik plays Chanu, and Christopher Simpson plays Karim, with Naeema Begum, Lana Rahman and Lalita Ahmed in supporting roles. Running 102 minutes, it is a drama adapted from a novel.

Brick Lane was Gavron's first feature, followed years later by Suffragette and then Rocks. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 44 votes, a small sample reflecting limited attention on that platform rather than wide consensus.
