A meteor shower lights up the sky with a strange green glow. Almost everyone who watches it is struck blind the next morning. Bill Masen, a merchant navy officer recovering in a London hospital with his eyes bandaged after an injury, misses the spectacle and discovers a city gone silent and helpless. Meanwhile, tall carnivorous plants known as triffids, capable of uprooting themselves and moving, begin hunting the blind population and spreading across the country. Bill sets out through the chaos, joining forces with other survivors as they search for a way to fight back against the plants.
The film is a British science fiction and horror production directed by Steve Sekely, who had worked across several European countries since the early 1930s, with Freddie Francis also taking a directing credit; Francis went on to direct a string of horror films through the 1960s and 1970s, beginning with this release in 1963. Bernard Gordon wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Howard Keel as Bill Masen, Nicole Maurey, Janette Scott, Mervyn Johns and Kieron Moore, among a credited cast of 43.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.1 from around 9,700 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.1 from close to 200 votes, suggesting a modest but lasting interest in this adaptation of John Wyndham's novel. It runs 93 minutes.
