Short description

Minions is an animated family comedy that serves as a prequel to the Despicable Me series. It follows the small yellow creatures known as Minions, who have existed since the dawn of time and whose purpose is to serve the most villainous masters they can find. After a long history of accidentally losing those masters, the Minions withdraw into isolation and fall into despair. Three of them, Kevin, Stuart and Bob, set out to find a new leader for their kind. Their search brings them to a villain convention in 1960s New York, and eventually to London, where they meet the supervillain Scarlet Overkill and her inventor husband Herb.

Directors Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin share credit on the film, which sits between Coffin's Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3 and follows several of Balda's earlier short films. Brian Lynch wrote the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy produced. Sandra Bullock voices Scarlet Overkill, with Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan and Jennifer Saunders rounding out the voice cast.

Released in June 2015, the film had a budget of 74 million dollars and went on to earn about 1.16 billion dollars worldwide, a return that made it one of the biggest animated releases of its year. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from roughly 283,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.4 from about 11,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 222 reviews places it slightly below those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the 37th minute of the film, Scarlett asks the minions about the woman in the portrait depicting Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, and Kevin replies: “La cucaracha.” This is a famous Mexican folk song that the National Symphony Orchestra of the country performed during Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Mexico in 1975. In translation, this expression means “The Cockroach.”
  • Director Pierre Coffin voiced all 899 Minions.
  • The solo that Stuart plays on the new electric guitar at the end of the cartoon is a composition by Edward Van Halen called "Eruption".
  • During the bedtime story scene, Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" plays in the background.
  • A red, American-style fire hydrant can be seen in the film. Such hydrants did not exist in Great Britain.
  • The film's events take place in 1968, and in the scene where the Minions try to enter the Tower of London, it can be noticed that England was already using the decimal monetary system, although it was only adopted in 1971.
  • This is the first film in which Sandra Bullock portrays a villain.
  • The British Empire crown worn by Bob during the "coronation" scene can also be seen in "Despicable Me" (2010), when all the minions offer treasures to help Gru steal the moon.
  • Worldwide box office receipts for "Minions" exceeded one billion dollars. Thus, Universal became the first studio in history to have three films cross that mark in a single year. The other two films are "Furious 7" (2015) and "Jurassic World" (2015).
