Amar Varma is a radio journalist investigating separatist activity in northern India. On assignment he meets a mysterious woman named Meghna, and although he is drawn to her, she keeps her distance and rebuffs his feelings. Back in Delhi for the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence, Amar agrees to an arranged engagement to Preeti. Meghna then reappears in his life asking for help, bringing with her a secret connected to the militants he has been tracking.
Mani Ratnam directed and co-wrote the film, which was produced by Bharat Shah through Madras Talkies and RGV Film Factory. It followed a run of films Ratnam had made from 1985 onward and came well before his later work such as Guru, Raavanan, the two Ponniyin Selvan parts and Thug Life. Shah Rukh Khan plays Amar, Manisha Koirala plays Meghna and Preity Zinta plays Preeti. The cast runs to 44 credited performers and the crew to 52.
Made for about 5 million dollars, the film took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide, a return of more than double its budget. It holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 33,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.5 from five reviews.
