Journey into Fear follows Howard Graham, an American ballistics expert whose stay in Turkey turns dangerous when Nazi agents mark him for death. After an attempt on his life at an Istanbul nightclub, a Turkish security officer arranges for him to leave the country by ship. Graham boards believing he is escaping, only to find that the people hunting him are travelling on the same vessel, along with several other passengers whose loyalties are unclear.
The film was directed by Norman Foster, the earliest of three titles listed for him, working from a screenplay by Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, who also produced. Cotten plays Graham, with Dolores del Río, Ruth Warrick, Agnes Moorehead, Everett Sloane and Welles among the cast. Running just over an hour, it is a compact thriller made by RKO Radio Pictures with Welles's Mercury Productions.
The reception has been moderate over the years. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from around 5,200 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from roughly a hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from fifteen reviews places professional assessments somewhat higher than the general audience scores.
