Short description

Masterminds is a crime comedy set in the late 1990s in the southern United States. David Ghantt, played by Zach Galifianakis, works for an armored car company, driving millions of dollars between banks that the money does not belong to. His routine is brightened only by his co-worker Kelly Campbell, portrayed by Kristen Wiig, and it is Kelly who draws him into a scheme devised by Steve Chambers, played by Owen Wilson. Together with a group of inexperienced criminals, they set out to steal seventeen million dollars from the company's vault. The robbery succeeds, but the trail of evidence left behind proves hard to hide, and David soon finds the money and his freedom slipping away from him. The film is loosely based on a real armored car robbery carried out in North Carolina.

Jared Hess directed the film, the fourth of the eight features listed for him, arriving between Gentlemen Broncos and Ninety-Five Senses. The screenplay comes from Hubbel Palmer, Emily Spivey and Chris Bowman, with John Goldwyn and Lorne Michaels producing. Alongside Galifianakis, Wilson and Wiig, the cast includes Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Jason Sudeikis, part of a credited cast of 73 with a credited crew of 249.

Made for a budget of 25 million dollars, the film took in roughly 29 million dollars worldwide. It holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 58,000 votes, and the same rating on TMDB from around 1,900 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the first film in Jared Hess's filmography for which the director did not write the screenplay.
  • Jim Carrey was originally cast in the lead role, but he was eventually replaced by Zach Galifianakis.
  • The film is based on the actual robbery of the Loomis, Fargo & Co. bank in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1997, where 17.3 million dollars were stolen.
  • The film was originally intended to be titled 'Loomis Fargo'.
  • The promotional brochures listed Emily Spivey, Jody Hill, Danny McBride, Chris Bowman, and Hubbell Palmer as the screenwriters. Eventually, following the intervention of the Writers Guild, Spivey, Bowman, and Palmer were credited as the creators and screenwriters (with Spivey listed first among the creators, and Bowman and Palmer first among the screenwriters).
  • The film was shot in the USA and Puerto Rico.
  • Relativity Media faced financial difficulties, and the film's release was moved from August to October 2015. Soon, however, the company filed for bankruptcy, and the film's release was postponed indefinitely.
  • This is already the second film starring both Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis. The first was the comedy "Wedding Crashers" (2005).
