Shinichi Kudo was a celebrated teenage detective until a poison reduced him to the body of a small child. Living under the name Conan Edogawa, he keeps his identity hidden from almost everyone, including Ran Mouri, the friend he cares for most. An invitation addressed to Shinichi draws Conan and Ran toward a gathering hosted by the architect Teiji Moriya, and soon an unknown bomber begins taunting the young detective with clues about devices planted around the city. Conan races to disarm each one, while a meeting with Ran at a cinema inside a Moriya-designed skyscraper turns into a countdown, as the building itself is rigged with explosives. The film, the first feature spun off from Gosho Aoyama's manga, sets the pattern the series would follow.
Detective Conan: The Time Bombed Skyscraper was released in Japan in April 1997 and runs 94 minutes. It is the first film directed by Kenji Kodama, who went on to direct the next several entries in the franchise, up to Detective Conan: Crossroad in the Ancient Capital in 2003, and returned to the series decades later. Kazunari Kouchi wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast includes Minami Takayama as Conan, Kappei Yamaguchi as Shinichi, Wakana Yamazaki as Ran, Akira Kamiya as Kogoro Mouri and Kenichi Ogata as Hiroshi Agasa, among 27 credited performers and 73 credited crew.
The film took about 9 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure that reflects the domestic scale of the release at the time. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 4,600 votes, and on TMDB 7.4/10 from roughly 282 votes, indicating a settled, favorable response from viewers.
