Short description

One Night at McCool's follows three men whose lives are upended by a woman named Jewel. A bartender named Randy meets her when she walks into his bar one night, and she soon moves in with him. A lawyer named Carl, Randy's cousin, and Detective Dehling, who is investigating a killing connected to Jewel, are both drawn to her as well. The film presents their overlapping accounts of the same woman and the events surrounding them, as each man's involvement with her pulls him deeper into trouble. The story unfolds as a crime comedy built around competing versions of one night.

Harald Zwart directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Stan Seidel. It was produced by Michael Douglas and Allison Lyon Segan. The cast includes Matt Dillon as Randy, Liv Tyler as Jewel, Michael Douglas as Mr. Burmeister, Paul Reiser as Carl, Reba McEntire as Dr. Green and John Goodman as Detective Dehling. Zwart went on to make Agent Cody Banks, The Pink Panther 2, The Karate Kid, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and The 12th Man before ViQueens.

The film was released in April 2001 and runs 93 minutes. Made for a budget of 18 million dollars, it earned about 13 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 6.2 rating from 32,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 5.9 from 390 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 103 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The character played by Michael Douglas sports a hairstyle similar to that of Dennis Hopper's character in David Lynch's crime drama Blue Velvet (1986).
  • The film had an alternative ending. In it, Michael Douglas's character kills Elmo, played by Andrew Dice Clay. Matt Dillon's character is blamed for the shootout; he is arrested and, as he leaves, sees Liv Tyler's character getting into Michael Douglas's car. He realizes that the whole thing was planned by them. Test audiences did not like this ending, so it was reshot.
