Francesco Dellamorte works as the caretaker of a cemetery in the small northern Italian town of Buffalora. His duties go beyond ordinary groundskeeping: seven days after burial, the dead rise from their graves with a hunger for the living, and Francesco and his mute, simple-minded assistant Gnaghi put them back down. The rest of the townspeople dismiss the phenomenon as a figment of Francesco's imagination, leaving the two men alone with the task. Francesco's solitary routine is disrupted by a young widow, known only as She, with whom he becomes involved.
Michele Soavi directed the film, his fourth feature after Stage Fright, The Church and The Sect, from a screenplay by Gianni Romoli, who also produced alongside Soavi and Tilde Corsi. Rupert Everett plays Francesco, with François Hadji-Lazaro as Gnaghi and Anna Falchi as She. The Italian, French and German co-production had a budget of about four million dollars. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.9 from 591 votes. The film blends comedy and horror across its 104-minute runtime.
