Josh Framm and his dog Buddy, who became a local celebrity after showing a talent for basketball, now turn to American football. Josh joins his school team, which sits at the bottom of its league, and Buddy's abilities on the field help turn the team's fortunes around. Their season is complicated by a pair of circus owners, Natalya and Popov, who want to capture Buddy and make him the star of their show.
The film is a sequel to Air Bud, with Kevin Zegers returning as Josh and Gregory Harrison and Cynthia Stevenson playing Dr. Patrick Sullivan and Jackie Framm. Richard Martin directed from a screenplay by Paul Tamasy and Aaron Mendelsohn, with Robert Vince producing. It was Martin's second feature as director, following Midnight Matinee a decade earlier.
Released in August 1998, the film is a Canada-United States co-production from Walt Disney Pictures, Keystone Entertainment and Dimension Films, running 90 minutes. Made for around 11 million dollars, it earned roughly the same amount worldwide. Audiences have been lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 4.6 out of 10 from about 6,600 votes, and on TMDB 5.1 out of 10 from around 199 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 28 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
