Without Limits

Without Limits follows Steve Prefontaine, the American distance runner who set national records in the early 1970s. The film traces his youth in Oregon, his time at the University of Oregon under coach Bill Bowerman, and his rise to the Munich Olympics, where the 5,000-metre race becomes the centre of his ambitions. It also explores his personal life and his relationship with Mary Marckx, setting his athletic drive against the pressures that come with fame.

Robert Towne directed the film, his second feature after Tequila Sunrise, and wrote the screenplay with Kenny Moore. Billy Crudup plays Prefontaine, with Donald Sutherland as Bowerman, Monica Potter as Mary Marckx, Jeremy Sisto as Frank Shorter, Matthew Lillard as Roscoe Devine and Dean Norris as Bill Dellinger. Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner produced through Cruise/Wagner Productions with Warner Bros. Pictures; the credited cast runs to 62 names and the crew to 54.
