Saturn in Opposition

Saturn in Opposition, originally Saturno contro, is an Italian drama released in 2007. It follows a group of friends in their thirties and forties in Rome whose comfortable lives are upended by a sudden event. Davide, a writer, and Lorenzo, who works in advertising, live together and host the gatherings that hold the circle together. Among them are Antonio, a bank employee unhappily married to the psychologist Angelica, the Turkish translator Neval and her policeman husband Roberto, and Sergio, Davide's former partner. Their dinners and conversations carry on as usual until Lorenzo collapses one evening, and the group's friendships, secrets and long-buried feelings are pushed to the surface.

The film is directed by Ferzan Özpetek, the third of thirteen films in his directing career, following His Secret Life and preceding Loose Cannons, and he wrote the screenplay with Gianni Romoli, who produced alongside Tilde Corsi. The cast is headed by Pierfrancesco Favino, Stefano Accorsi, Margherita Buy, Serra Yılmaz, Ennio Fantastichini and Ambra Angiolini, with twenty-two credited cast members and sixty-four credited crew.

Made for a budget of about six million dollars, the film took roughly eleven million dollars worldwide, a solid return for an Italian ensemble drama. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from about 5,300 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 out of 10 from around 400 votes, indicating a generally favourable but not rapturous audience response.
