Hallam Foe is a seventeen-year-old living in the Scottish countryside with his father and stepmother. Still grieving his mother's death, he blames his stepmother, Verity, for it and spends much of his time watching people, often from a treehouse on the family property. After a confrontation at home, he leaves for Edinburgh, where he continues observing strangers from the city's rooftops and sometimes slips into their homes. There he meets Kate, a hotel employee whose resemblance to his mother draws him close.
David Mackenzie directed the film, his third feature after Young Adam and Asylum, and wrote the screenplay with Ed Whitmore. Jamie Bell plays Hallam, with Sophia Myles as Kate, Ciarán Hinds as his father Julius, Claire Forlani as Verity and Jamie Sives and Maurice Roëves in supporting roles. It is a British production from Film4 Productions, Ingenious Film Partners, Scottish Screen and Sigma Films, running 95 minutes and mixing comedy, drama and thriller elements.
Made for about 8 million dollars, the film took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from 192 votes, while critics rated it 6.6 from 64 reviews, so audiences and reviewers were closely aligned in their assessment.
