The General's Daughter

The body of Captain Elisabeth Campbell is discovered on a Georgia army base where she served as a psychological operations instructor. Because she was the daughter of the post commander, Lieutenant General Joseph Campbell, the case draws attention well beyond the base. Warrant Officer Paul Brenner, an experienced investigator with the Army's Criminal Investigation Division, is assigned to the killing, and Warrant Officer Sara Sunhill, a former colleague and former partner of his, joins him. As they question people at the post and look into Elisabeth's private life, the picture becomes less clear rather than more, and the inquiry runs up against the loyalty and secrecy of the institution they both serve.

Simon West directed the film, the second of the fourteen features he has made to date, following Con Air and preceding Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. William Goldman and Christopher Bertolini wrote the screenplay, and Mace Neufeld produced. John Travolta plays Brenner and Madeleine Stowe plays Sunhill, with James Cromwell as General Campbell, Timothy Hutton as Colonel William Kent, Leslie Stefanson as Elisabeth Campbell and Daniel von Bargen as Police Chief Yardley. The production credits list 55 cast members and 254 crew.

Released in June 1999, the film had a budget of about 95 million dollars and took roughly 150 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 6.4 from about a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 91 reviews places it below those audience scores.
