Ocean's Eleven
Short description
Danny Ocean is a charismatic thief who is released from prison on parole and, within a day, is already assembling a team for his next job. His target is a single vault shared by three of Las Vegas's biggest casinos, all owned by the same man, Terry Benedict. Danny hand-picks eleven specialists, each with a particular skill, for a heist that has to be pulled off in one night. A complication lies in his personal life: his ex-wife, Tess, is now involved with Benedict, which raises the stakes of the scheme considerably.
Steven Soderbergh directed the film, the eighth of thirty-five features he has directed in chronological order, coming after Traffic and before Solaris. Ted Griffin wrote the screenplay, and Jerry Weintraub produced. George Clooney plays Danny, with Brad Pitt as Rusty Ryan, Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, Andy García as Terry Benedict, Julia Roberts as Tess, and Casey Affleck among the large credited cast of seventy-nine, supported by a crew of 168.
Released in December 2001, the film had a budget of 85 million dollars and took about 451 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from roughly 670,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5 from around 13,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.4 from 188 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- Apart from Danny Ocean, the names of all other characters from the original film were changed in the remake.
- Henry Silva and Angie Dickinson, who starred in "Ocean's 11" (1960), appeared in its remake in cameo roles (a fight scene).
- In the episode where Benedict reviews security camera footage provided by the robbers, the screen with the footage from the vault displays the numbers "... N 419". In the next shot, the screen of the same camera, still showing footage of the robbers, displays "... S 420".
- In the scene where Rusty (Brad Pitt) teaches celebrities to play poker, Joshua Jackson appears with the same skull ring that he wore in "Skeletons" (2000).
- John Favreau was offered to write the screenplay, but he declined.
- The final scene, in which the main characters stand in front of the fountain, imitates a famous episode from Philip Kaufman’s “The Right Stuff” (1983), where astronauts watch the performance of dancer Sally Rand.
- Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson were supposed to play the brothers Virgil and Turk Malloy, but they were unable to film due to their involvement in the project 'The Royal Tenenbaums' (2001). These roles were ultimately played by Casey Affleck and Scott Caan.
- Film director Steven Soderbergh made a cameo appearance, playing one of the safe robbers.
- Warner Bros. paid $200,000 for the use of the house, where the character of Elliott Gould lives according to the plot, during filming.
- Warren Beatty, Michael Douglas, and Ralph Fiennes were considered for the role of Terry Benedict.
- Ewan McGregor was considered for the role of Basher.
- Initially, Don Rickles was chosen for the role of Sol Bloom.
