Short description
An alien race called the Boov, led by Captain Smek, has spent a long time moving from planet to planet while hiding from their enemies, the Gorg. Earth looks like a suitable new home until the Boov discover it is already inhabited. They relocate the human population, but a girl named Tip avoids capture. She teams up with Oh, a Boov who has been banished by his own people after making a serious mistake, and the two set off together while Tip searches for her mother. Their journey matters for more than just the two of them.
The film is an animated family adventure directed by Tim Johnson, whose earlier features include Antz, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and Over the Hedge. It was made by DreamWorks Animation with a reported budget of 135 million US dollars and released in March 2015, going on to take about 369 million dollars worldwide. Jim Parsons voices Oh, Rihanna voices Tip and also performs songs for the soundtrack, while Steve Martin voices Captain Smek and Jennifer Lopez voices Lucy Tucci.
Audience response has been mixed but favorable: on IMDb the film holds 5.9 out of 10 from a small number of votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.8 from several thousand, with both figures drawn from modest samples. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 137 reviews places it below the audience scores. Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember wrote the screenplay.

- The film is based on Adam Rex's book “The True Meaning of Smekday.”
- The character of Jim Parsons was originally named J. Lo, but the name was eventually changed to Oh. J. Lo is a nickname for Jennifer Lopez, who voiced one of the film's characters.
- The reproduction of the painting with stars that the main characters took from Paris is by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. He painted it in June 1889 and it is called “The Starry Night.” The original painting is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
