Backcountry

A city couple, Alex and Jenn, set out on a camping trip into the Canadian wilderness. Alex is an experienced hiker and Jenn is not, and she agrees to the trip with some reluctance. On the trail they have an unsettling encounter with a stranger named Brad, a fellow camper who takes an interest in Jenn. As the two push deeper into the forest, they lose their way and their supplies run low, leaving them with no way to call for help. They have wandered into the territory of a black bear, and the struggle to find a route home tests both their survival skills and their relationship.

Backcountry is a Canadian drama and thriller released in 2015, written and directed by Adam MacDonald. It runs 92 minutes and was produced by Thomas Michael through Fella Films. The cast is led by Missy Peregrym as Jenn, Jeff Roop as Alex, Eric Balfour as Brad and Nicholas Campbell as a ranger. It was MacDonald's first feature as director, ahead of Pyewacket in 2017, Out Come the Wolves in 2024 and This Is Not a Test in 2026, and he wrote the screenplay himself.

The film drew a critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 54 reviews, a warmer response than that of general audiences, who rate it 6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 27,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from just over 700 votes.
