Tormented
Short description
Tormented is a British horror comedy about a school where a group of popular students routinely terrorise those they deem outsiders. Among their targets is Darren Mullet, who takes his own life after the abuse becomes unbearable. Soon afterwards, his former persecutors start receiving messages that appear to come from Darren, and the killings begin. The friends suspect Darren's only ally is behind it, though the possibility that Darren himself has returned is left open. Justine Fielding, a newcomer to the school and the girlfriend of ringleader Bradley White, is drawn into the events as the group's circle closes in on itself.
The film was directed by Jon Wright from a screenplay by Stephen Prentice, and it was Wright's first feature, preceding Grabbers, Robot Overlords and Unwelcome. Alex Pettyfer plays Bradley, with April Pearson as Tasha, Tuppence Middleton as Justine, Calvin A. Dean as Darren, Dimitri Leonidas and Georgia King in supporting roles. The cast runs to twenty credited performers.
Released in 2009, the film took about one million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from roughly 6,700 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.1 from a much smaller sample of 138 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 from 37 reviews places it slightly above those audience scores, suggesting a modest reception across all groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Calvin Dean’s character strangles Larissa Wilson’s heroine, he actually had to strangle her, as it proved impossible to show this using computer graphics.
- It took three hours to apply Calvin Dean’s makeup before filming. Every vein was drawn on his face and hands with a special compound. During filming in the pool, he had to have this makeup glued onto his face.
- When April Pearson’s character fell into an empty grave before being beheaded, she actually fell onto a real coffin with a body inside.
