The Cabin in the Woods
Short description
A group of college friends head to a remote cabin in the woods for a weekend away from their studies, planning little more than drinking and celebrating. They arrive to find a run-down building with creaking floors and unsettling paintings, and when they settle in for a game, a hatch opens in the floor and leads them to a cellar full of strange objects and an old journal. Reading from it sets off a night of horror, and it becomes clear that the friends are not as alone as they believed.
The Cabin in the Woods is the feature directing debut of Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay with Joss Whedon; Whedon also produced, and the two had previously collaborated as writer and producer. Goddard went on to direct Bad Times at the El Royale in 2018. The cast is led by Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams and Anna Hutchison as the five friends, with Richard Jenkins among the supporting players. It was made for about 30 million dollars and took roughly 71 million worldwide, a modest return.
On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 488,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from far fewer. The critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 290 reviews stands notably above both audience scores.

- The set design for the central control room was created in the spirit of 70s high-tech and NASA's mission control in Houston.
- Costume designer Shona Trpčić reflected the contrast between the forest house and the polished central headquarters through carefully selected clothing colors for the youth and adults.
- As Dana and Marty descend in the elevator and showcase various monsters in transparent cubes, one can spot a witch, a stout figure, and a tank from the computer game Left 4 Dead among them.
- Martin Whist and the filmmakers, while studying old photographs, developed an authentic design for the cabin dating back to the Gold Rush or the post-Civil War period.
