A Dirty Carnival

A Dirty Carnival follows Byung-doo, a young man who works as a low-level enforcer collecting debts for a criminal organization. He is the main provider for his sick mother and younger siblings, and his modest position leaves him struggling to keep them afloat. When the boss, President Hwang, faces pressure from a prosecutor, Byung-doo sees a chance to move up in the organization by taking on a dangerous assignment.

The film was directed and written by Yoo Ha, arriving between Once Upon a Time in High School and A Frozen Flower in his filmography. Zo In-sung leads the cast as Byung-doo, with Cheon Ho-jin, Namkoong Min, Lee Bo-young, Jin Goo and Yoon Je-moon in supporting roles; 116 cast members are credited in total. Made for about 5 million USD, it took roughly 11 million USD worldwide, a solid return for a mid-budget Korean crime drama.

On IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from around 9,700 votes, and on TMDB 7/10 from 232 votes. A critics' rating of 7/10 from 135 reviews places it broadly in line with the audience response. These figures point to a film that has been consistently well regarded by both reviewers and viewers since its 2006 release.
