Sucker Punch
Short description
Sucker Punch is set in 1950 and centres on Babydoll, a young woman whose abusive stepfather has her committed to a psychiatric hospital, where she is scheduled to be lobotomised within days. To shield herself from what awaits her, she escapes into an elaborate fantasy world. In that imagined reality she and four other young inmates — Sweet Pea, Rocket, Blondie and Amber — set out to recover five objects, a task that becomes the key to their attempt to get out. The film moves between the institution and the fantasy, and the border between the two grows increasingly hard to place.
Zack Snyder directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Steve Shibuya, and produced it with Deborah Snyder. It was his fifth film as director, following Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and preceding Man of Steel. Emily Browning plays Babydoll, with Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung and Carla Gugino among the cast.
Released in March 2011, the film cost about 82 million dollars and returned roughly 90 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb across some 261,000 votes, and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller body of votes. Critics were decidedly cooler, giving it 4.2 out of 10 across 219 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Above the gates of the mental institution, a cast iron sign reads: “Lennox House — Brattleboro, Vermont.” Indeed, in the town of Brattleboro, Vermont, there is a psychiatric hospital called Brattleboro Retreat. However, unlike its cinematic counterpart, it is known for its humane treatment of patients. The hospital buildings in the film and in reality have nothing in common.
- Evan Rachel Wood was the producers' initial choice for the role of Rocket, but she had to decline due to commitments to other projects.
- Despite being the main character, Doll doesn't have a single line of dialogue for the first 20 minutes of the film.
- Emma Stone could have played the role of Amber, but she chose to star in 'Easy A'.
- Vanessa Anne Hudgens agreed to the role of Blondie because the actress had repeatedly expressed a desire to stop being associated with Gabriella Montes from 'High School Musical' in the audience's eyes.
- Specifically for the film, actress Emily Browning recorded a cover version of the famous Eurythmics song 'Sweet Dreams', which can be heard at the very beginning of the movie.
- Dollface's gun charms include: a rabbit, a baby bottle, an hourglass, a teddy bear, and a skull with a bow. The gun and katana feature an engraving of the letter 'B' and intertwined stems, cherry berries, daisies, and rabbits. The katana scabbard is decorated with a pattern of golden snowflakes. The weapon design was created by Emily Browning, who played Dollface.
- Eric Dane was one of the candidates for the role of the Doctor (Major).
- The number 5 is displayed on the two planes, helicopter, and robot driven by Amber (corresponding to the number of girls on the team). In addition to the pink rabbit, beneath which several hieroglyphs are written in red, the robot's right shield features a skull in a yellow circle, and the left shield depicts two cherries. To the right, closer to the shield, images of three German Iron Crosses are visible.
- Four animated short films directed by Ben Hibon, based on each of the worlds imagined by Doll, were released to support the film.
