Last Night follows Joanna and Michael Reed, a married couple living in New York whose relationship is tested when they spend a night apart. Michael travels to Philadelphia on business with Laura, an attractive colleague, while Joanna stays in the city and runs into Alex, a former love. Over roughly thirty-six hours, both are confronted with temptation and with choices about their marriage.
The film is a drama with romantic elements, set in contemporary New York and built around two parallel evenings. Keira Knightley plays Joanna, Sam Worthington plays Michael, Eva Mendes plays Laura and Guillaume Canet plays Alex, with supporting turns from Griffin Dunne and Stephanie Romanov. Massy Tadjedin wrote the screenplay and directed, making her feature directorial debut; her second film as director, Berlin, I Love You, followed in 2019. The producers were Nick Wechsler, Tadjedin and Sidonie Dumas, and the production involved American and French companies.
Released in 2010, the film runs 93 minutes. Made for about 7 million dollars, it took roughly 8 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 6.1 rating from 836 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 5.5 from 72 reviews, so audiences and critics landed fairly close to each other. The cast and the intimate two-strand structure place it among the relationship dramas of its period.
