Short description
Lucy is a young woman living in Taipei who is drawn into a drug trafficking scheme against her will. A packet of a synthetic substance is placed inside her body for transport, but when it leaks into her system, it begins unlocking her mental capacity far beyond normal human limits. As her abilities expand, she gains control over her own body, other people and technology, and she sets out to find those responsible while seeking scientists who can explain what is happening to her.
Luc Besson wrote and directed the film, the fifteenth of the twenty features he has directed in chronological order, following The Family and preceding Valerian and a Thousand Planets. Scarlett Johansson plays Lucy, with Morgan Freeman as Professor Norman and Choi Min-sik as Mr. Jang among a credited cast of sixty. The production, made in France, cost about 40 million dollars and returned roughly 469 million dollars worldwide, a large multiple of its budget.
On IMDb the film holds 6.4 from about 576,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from some 17,000 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 234 reviews places professional assessments close to the audience scores, with neither side markedly more favourable than the other.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Luc Besson played a cameo role as a doctor in a hospital in Paris.
- In the flashback scene, Native Americans are shown in New York. In reality, these were Plains Indians, not natives of New York. Furthermore, they are riding horses, which were brought to the New World by Europeans.
- When Lucy speaks to the French police, she states that CPH4 appears as a blue powder. In fact, the drug is in the form of blue crystals.
- When Lucy calls the French police, she has already passed immigration control. However, in the next shot, she has not yet gone through passport control.
- When Lucy removes the package of the drug from the courier’s stomach in France, her hands are completely covered in grime. In the next shot, she gets into the car with the police officer, and her hands are already perfectly clean.
- When Lucy's image appears on the HDTV in the hotel room, scan lines are visible that shouldn't be visible on an HDTV. Additionally, the width of these lines changes with each frame.

In real life, during operations, disinfected gloves are immediately replaced with new ones to prevent the development of infection in the postoperative wound.
- Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman) claims that life on Earth appeared 1 billion years ago. In fact, experts estimate it at 3.7 billion years.
- Professor Norman claims that the human brain is used only 10% (15 billion neurons out of 100). In reality this is a popular myth: the brain is used 100%, but not simultaneously, only as needed in its various sections.
- During the scene where Lucy is transported to New York, there are many people around, but no one notices her, and no one finds it strange that a girl suddenly appears out of nowhere, or that she is sitting on an office chair in the middle of Times Square. However, when Lucy is transported to the age of dinosaurs, a predatory creature notices her immediately.

- In an interview, Luc Besson revealed that it took 10 years to realize this project. Nevertheless, he said that "such an assumption" should be a great starting point for a science fiction film.

- The film states that Lucy was the first human. In reality, science does not have a concept of a "first human" or any other first representative of a species. Lucy is the oldest individual of the species Australopithecus afarensis discovered to date.
