Short description
Men, Women & Children follows teenagers and their parents in a suburban Texas town as the internet reshapes their relationships, their sense of self and their romantic lives. Several households drift through the same routines: parents distracted and disconnected from each other, adolescents absorbed in games, social platforms and the pressure to look and behave a certain way. Online life offers escape and connection while quietly deepening the distance between the people closest to them, and the film traces how those tensions surface across the community.
Jason Reitman directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Erin Cressida Wilson, adapting Chad Kultgen's novel. It sits between Labor Day and Tully in his filmography, the sixth of the ten features he has directed to date. Adam Sandler and Rosemarie DeWitt play Don and Helen Truby, with Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer and Dean Norris among the ensemble, and Emma Thompson providing narration.
Released in October 2014, the film cost about 16 million dollars and returned roughly 2 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 35,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from about 1,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 across 136 reviews puts it well below those viewer scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The screenwriter, director, and producer Jason Reitman believed that since so much of the film’s plot depended on text messages, chats, and photos, they couldn’t simply limit themselves to blank screens. The filmmakers had to put in a lot of effort (and a significant portion of the filming budget) to create believable versions of popular websites with which the actors and actresses could interact in real time. According to Reitman, creating the digital world cost as much as building the real sets.
