Short description

Warm Bodies takes place in a world devastated by a plague that has turned much of humanity into flesh-eating zombies, with the surviving humans barricaded in fortified cities. At the center is R, a zombie who can barely remember his own name or speak clearly but who retains thoughts, longings and a sense of dissatisfaction with his existence. During a raid, he encounters Julie, a young woman from the fortified human side, and instead of killing her he hides her and protects her. The bond that forms between them begins to change R in ways that suggest a cure for the zombie condition might be possible, though the distrust between humans and the undead and the hostility of both the military and other zombie factions stand in the way.

Jonathan Levine directed and wrote the screenplay for the film, which sits between 50/50 and The Night Before in his filmography. Nicholas Hoult plays R, Teresa Palmer plays Julie Grigio, and John Malkovich appears as Colonel Grigio, with Lio Tipton, Dave Franco and Rob Corddry among the credited cast. The production, made in Canada and the United States, cost about 35 million dollars and returned roughly 117 million dollars worldwide.

Audience scores of 6.8 on IMDb from 255,000 votes and 6.5 on TMDB from 6,489 votes sit close to the critics' rating of 6.8 from 209 reviews, indicating broadly agreeable but moderate reception across all three groups.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The story is partially based on Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet", which can be guessed from the characters' names. "R" stands for "Romeo", "Julia" for "Juliet", "Perry" for "Paris", "M" for "Mercutio", and "Nora" for Juliet's "Nurse" (the Nora character in the film is a nurse).
  • The actors playing zombies did not blink. This proved difficult for some, particularly Nicholas Holt, who was involved in several rather long scenes. The zombies started blinking again later, when the plot required their humanity to return.
  • The film is based on Isaac Marion's novel "Warm Bodies" (2010).
  • Initially, Nora was supposed to be African American and half Ethiopian, but they decided to cast a white actress (Analeigh Tipton) instead.
  • In preparation for filming, the actors and extras involved in the film attended a "zombie boot camp" (similar to army basic training), where they learned how to walk and move like the living dead.
