Short description
Beyond a Reasonable Doubt is a thriller set in Shreveport, Louisiana, where district attorney Mark Hunter has built a reputation for never losing a case and is now running for governor. C.J. Nicholas, a young and ambitious journalist, becomes convinced that Hunter's winning record rests on evidence he manufactures to secure convictions, and sets out to prove it. His plan is to turn himself into the prime suspect in a murder, with a colleague filming the proceedings, so that Hunter will be exposed when he brings fabricated forensic proof into court. The scheme draws the prosecutor's attention and does not go as intended.
The film is a remake of Fritz Lang's 1956 film of the same name. Peter Hyams directed from his own screenplay, with Mark Damon, Moshe Diamant and Limor Diamant producing. Jesse Metcalfe plays C.J. Nicholas and Michael Douglas plays Mark Hunter, with Amber Tamblyn, Joel David Moore, Orlando Jones and Lawrence P. Beron among the credited cast of 37. It was Hyams's sixteenth film as director in chronological order, following A Sound of Thunder and preceding Enemies Closer.

What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film's director, Peter Hyams, did not like the script and left the project. Afterward, other directors expressed interest in filming the script, but the project saw no progress for many years. However, Hyams remained desperate to make a film different from those he had been directing recently—which were lavish, pretentious, and packed with special effects. He wanted to create a thriller, almost a classic film noir, and wanted to cast young people rather than adults; ultimately, he decided to take on the picture.
