While We're Young
Short description
Josh and Cornelia are a married couple in their forties living in Brooklyn. Josh works as a documentary filmmaker, but he is stuck on a project and feels his life has grown routine. Cornelia, a producer, shares his unease as friends their age settle into parenthood. The two meet Jamie and Darby, a younger couple roughly twenty years their junior, and are drawn to their spontaneity. The four begin spending time together, and the older pair find themselves reconsidering how they live and how they feel about getting older. Tensions emerge as the differences between the two couples become harder to ignore.
Noah Baumbach directed and wrote the film, his eighth feature in a run of fourteen. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play Josh and Cornelia, with Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried as Jamie and Darby. Charles Grodin and Maria Dizzia appear among a credited cast of forty-one.
The film was released in March 2015 and runs 97 minutes. Made for about 10 million dollars, it took roughly 17 million worldwide. Audiences are more reserved than critics: it holds 6.3 on IMDb from over 56,000 votes and 6 on TMDB from about 1,200, while the critics' rating is 7.3 from 202 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jamie plays in a band called “Cookie O'Puss.” The actor who plays Fletcher, Adam Horovitz, is a guitarist for the hip-hop group Beastie Boys, and “Cookie Puss” is the title of one of the group's mini-albums.
- When Josh leaves Leslie's father's apartment, a sign above the neighboring door reveals that he lives in Gramercy, one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Manhattan. It features private homes, and entrance to the park is restricted by a gate, with keys issued only to residents.
- Jamie and Darby's chick is named Nico. This is also the name of director Noah Baumbach's younger brother, who plays one of the guests at Fletcher and Marina's party.
- Darby and Josh make fun of the film 'Rosemary's Baby' (Roman Polanski, 1968). The actor Charles Grodin, who played Leslie, played the gynecologist Dr. Hill in that film.
- The concert scene at Lincoln Center was filmed at Time Warner Center and Columbus Circle Building.
