Short description
Set in 19th-century France, this drama follows Emma Bovary, the wife of a provincial doctor. Feeling trapped by a dull and restrictive existence, Emma seeks excitement and luxury through extravagant spending and several romantic affairs. Her attempts to escape her social reality and her mounting debts eventually lead to a tragic conclusion.

- The film is based on Gustave Flaubert's novel “Madame Bovary” (1856). After the novel was published in a journal, the author was accused of offending public morals and brought to trial. The scandalous notoriety of the work made it popular, and the acquittal on February 7, 1857, allowed for the novel’s publication as a separate book later that year.
