Desierto follows a group of Mexican migrants attempting to cross the desert border into the United States. When a truck carrying them breaks down, they continue on foot, only to be discovered by an armed man who has appointed himself a border patrol of one. Alongside his dog, he pursues the unarmed group through the hostile landscape, turning their search for a better life into a struggle to stay alive.
The film is directed by Jonás Cuarón, his first feature as a director. The screenplay is by Jonás Cuarón and Mateo García Elizondo, with Alfonso Cuarón among the producers. Gael García Bernal plays Moises, the father leading the crossing, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays Sam, the hunter. Diego Cataño, Marco Pérez, Alondra Hidalgo and Óscar Flores Guerrero appear in supporting roles.
Made for about 3 million US dollars, Desierto is a modest production that has earned a place in Jonás Cuarón's filmography ahead of Chupa and Campeón Gabacho. It received a limited theatrical release and circulated widely on home viewing. On IMDb the film holds a 6.1 rating from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.2 from roughly 400 votes, suggesting a modest but sustained level of audience interest.
