Short description
Alvin, Simon and Theodore are back with Dave, but a misunderstanding throws their household into turmoil. The chipmunks become convinced that Dave intends to propose to his new girlfriend while away on a trip, and that a marriage would mean being abandoned or pushed aside. To prevent that, the three of them set out on a cross-country journey to reach him in time and interrupt the proposal. Their plan runs into trouble almost immediately, and they end up racing against a deadline of only a few days.
Walt Becker directed the film, which came after Old Dogs in his filmography and before Clifford the Big Red Dog. The screenplay is by Randi Mayem Singer and Adam Sztykiel, with Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. and Janice Karman producing. Jason Lee returns as Dave, while Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney voice Alvin, Simon and Theodore. Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Josh Green also appear.
Released in December 2015, the film cost about 90 million dollars and took in roughly 234 million dollars worldwide. It runs 92 minutes and mixes adventure, animation, comedy, family and music. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, while the film critics' score stands at 3.7 out of 10 from 68 reviews, a notably cooler response than that of the general audience.
