Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Short description
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set in New York in 1926, decades before the events known from the Harry Potter stories. Newt Scamander, a British wizard who studies magical creatures, arrives in the city carrying a briefcase that is larger inside than out and holds a collection of rare and sometimes dangerous beasts along with the habitats he has built for them. When some of the creatures get loose, the American wizarding authorities take notice, and the escape risks exposing the magical community to the non-magical population at a time when tensions between the two are already high. Newt crosses paths with Tina Goldstein, an employee of the Magical Congress of the United States of America, and with Jacob Kowalski, a non-magical baker who becomes involved by accident. Together they try to recover the missing creatures.
David Yates directed the film, the fifth of the nine features he has made to date, following four Harry Potter instalments and preceding The Legend of Tarzan, two further Fantastic Beasts films, and Pain Hustlers. J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay, her first, and produced alongside Steve Kloves and David Heyman. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, with Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight among the cast.
Released in November 2016, the film had a budget of about 180 million dollars and took roughly 809 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.2 from around 539,000 votes and on TMDB 7.3 from some 20,000, while critics rated it 6.8 from 343 reviews, so audiences have been somewhat warmer toward it than reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming for some episodes took place in October 2015 in the premises of St. George's Hall in Liverpool.
- Matt Smith and Nicholas Hoult were considered for the role of Newt, but Eddie Redmayne was approved.
- J.K. Rowling confirmed that Tina is a shortened form of Porpentina.
- Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart, and Lily Simmons were considered for the role of Queenie, but actress and singer Alison Sudol was ultimately cast.
- Before Katherine Waterston was cast as Tina, Kate Upton and Elizabeth Debicki were considered for the role.
- Michael Cera and Josh Gad were considered for the role of Jacob, but Dan Fogler got the part.
- J.K. Rowling wrote the book 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' in 2001 and spent almost all of the royalties on charity. Over 80% of the cost of each book sold went to children in need around the world.
- Michael Cera was considered for the role of Jacob, but the actor declined to participate in the project in order to voice one of the characters in the upcoming animated film "The Lego Batman Movie" (2017).
- Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp had previously played the same character in the film 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'.
