Moscow Zero
Short description
Moscow Zero is a horror film set beneath the Russian capital, where a missing researcher draws his friend into the city's underground world. Sergei, an archaeologist, had been studying legends about demons and a doorway to hell said to lie under Moscow before he vanished. Owen, a priest, assembles a group to lead him through the tunnels and catacombs in search of him, and what begins as a rescue attempt takes him into a hidden society living below the streets.
The film was directed by María Lidón, following her 2004 feature The Life, from a screenplay by Adela Ibañez. It is a British and Spanish production with a budget of 10 million US dollars. Vincent Gallo plays Owen, with Oksana Akinshina as Lyuba, Val Kilmer as Andrey, Sage Stallone as Vassily, Joss Ackland as Tolstoy and Joaquim de Almeida as Yuri.
Released in November 2006, it runs 82 minutes and belongs to the action, drama and horror genres. Audience response has been weak: on IMDb it holds a rating of 3 out of 10 from around 1,900 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 3.4 out of 10 from about 35 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Maria Lidon noted that filming in the underground tunnels was incredibly difficult. Both the actors and the crew worked themselves to exhaustion—in very poor lighting and stale air.
- The so-called "Object D-6" (unofficial name – "Metro-2") is a former secret underground transport facility of the Moscow Metro, built for mobilization purposes. The film focuses specifically on this system. It was built during the Stalin era and was under the jurisdiction of the Special Objects Service of the former 15th Main Directorate of the KGB of the USSR and the Ministry of Defense. The "Metro-2" bunkers were intended to house the leadership of the Politburo and the Central Committee of the CPSU, as well as their families, in the event of war.
